In plain language

Delaware runs its deaf education through one school district. The Delaware School for the Deaf in Newark, founded in 1929 and known for most of its life as the Margaret S. Sterck School, belongs to the Christina School District, which also runs the Statewide Programs for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deaf-Blind: an outreach service for every district in the state, an early learning program for children from eighteen months, a deaf-blind program and an educational audiologist.

The school counted 105 students in September 2025, teaches in American Sign Language and English, and keeps a weekday residence hall for students from the southern half of the state. The state budget names the school in a small line each year, about 146,000 dollars for the residence, contracts and a preschool summer program, while the school's main funding comes through the ordinary unit formula and through tuition that Christina bills to itself and to other districts. In the 2024-25 school year the federal count found 285 Delaware children with a primary classification of hearing impairment and 50 who are deafblind; about a third of the school-age children with hearing impairment were in a separate school.

We read the website of every one of the state's 41 districts and charter schools and three related schools. Three publish their own deaf education staff or service, Christina as the operator, Appoquinimink with an itinerant service and Caesar Rodney with a single listed specialist. Eight mention deaf or hard of hearing students only in an eligibility list, a screening schedule or a staff list. The rest publish nothing on the subject, and none of them names the state school as its provider. The state does not publish how many deaf children each district serves, so where those children are cannot be shown from public records.
